After graduating from high school, I attended St. Cloud State. I graduated in May 1962 majoring in Mathematics and Social Science. There was a teacher shortage and I was getting calls almost every day in late August and was told if I just came up for an interview I was sure to be hired, but I wasn’t interested in teaching. I was accepted into the Air Force pilot training program in the fall of 1962 and went to Lackland AFB, Texas for Officer training and then I finished my pilot training at Laughlin AFB, Texas in February 1964.

I was based at Hamilton AFB near San Rafael, CA for two and half years and then served in Viet Nam. I was there for sixteen months and flew support for the Green Berets. It was interesting duty and we would sometimes return with bullet holes in the plane, but we didn’t worry about it. I did fly two missions that were more dangerous and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for those missions.

In 1968 I was out of the Air Force and hired as a pilot by Northwest Airlines. I was based in the Twin Cities most of the time, but spent one year in Seattle and two years in Honolulu. I did some international flights, but didn’t enjoy it, so I decided to fly the 757 which was mostly domestic flying. Most of my flying was to Alaska in the summer and the west coast and Florida in the winter. I retired in the summer of 1999.

I’ve been keeping busy with some volunteer work and have been on a number of bicycle trips in California, the San Juan Islands and Massachusetts. I’m involved in duplicate bridge and served for four years on the board of directors for St. Paul Bridge Center and have taught a bridge class at the Eagan Community Center. I enjoy travel and have been to all the continents except Antarctica. I don’t own a place in the warm weather, but spend part of the winter in Florida or Southern California.
